Lucid Over-the-Air Tips

  1. OTA software packages can be large. For fast, reliable downloads, it’s best to connect your vehicle to a trusted Wi-Fi network. The private Wi-Fi network at your home or office likely offers the most reliable performance, followed by a public Wi-Fi network.

  2. Whenever you see you have a software update available, install or schedule it as soon as possible. Software updates deliver key improvements and often new features, so staying up to date ensures you’re getting the most out of your Lucid. You’ll see update notifications on your in-car displays and in the Lucid mobile app.

  3. You can easily schedule updates to install when it’s convenient for you. See Scheduling a Software Update.

Go to Settings on the Pilot Panel, then tap Software. The software version number will be displayed below the image of your vehicle. To read the release notes, tap Release Notes.

Note: Depending on your vehicle, the user interface on your displays may appear slightly differently than it does here.

You can also check in the Lucid mobile app by tapping Software Update.

If an update is available, you will also see it on this screen. A message saying Software Update Available will be displayed with a new version number. To read the release notes for the update, tap Learn More in Lucid Air vehicles with UX 2.0 or What’s New in Lucid Air vehicles with UX 3.0 or in Lucid Gravity.

Lucid regularly releases OTA updates to our vehicles. If you haven’t installed an update in a while, you may be several software versions behind. It is not possible to install multiple updates at the same time—they must be completed one by one. This is another reason to keep up with your updates and to install them promptly once they are available.

Note as well that not all drivers receive their updates at the same time. Updates are delivered on a rolling basis across the entire fleet of Lucid vehicles, a few thousand vehicles at a time. This ensures the smoothest possible delivery to every driver. If you learn that an update is available, but you haven’t received a notification about installing it yet, rest assured that if the update applies to your vehicle, you will receive a notification soon.

Installing OTA Updates

When a software update is ready to install, you will see a notification on your displays and in the Lucid mobile app.

You can read more about the update in the release notes by tapping Learn More in Lucid Air vehicles with UX 2.0 or What’s New in Lucid Air vehicles with UX 3.0 and in Lucid Gravity. An estimate for how long the update will take to install will display along with the update information. This is the approximate amount of time you will be unable to drive or access your vehicle while the software is updating.

When you’re ready to install the update, follow the steps below. If you’d rather schedule the update for later, see Scheduling a Software Update.

Starting a Software Update

Certain conditions must be met before you can install an OTA update.

OTA Software Update Preconditions

  • Your vehicle must be in Park.

  • Your battery must be charged to at least 20%.

  • Your vehicle must have a strong internet connection.

  • Your vehicle must not have anyone inside, including pets.

  • Your vehicle doors, the trunk, and frunk must be closed.

  • Your vehicle must not be plugged into a DC fast charging station.

Once these conditions are met, follow these steps:

  1. In Lucid Air vehicles with UX 2.0, go to Settings > About. In Lucid Air vehicles with UX 3.0 and in Lucid Gravity, go to Settings > Software.

  2. Tap Install Now.

  3. Read the Before You Start instructions, then tap Next.

  4. If any of the preconditions listed above is not met, you will see which ones are blocking the OTA on the Pilot Panel. As the conditions are met, a check mark will appear next to them.

  5. Once all the preconditions are met, a two-minute countdown will begin for you to exit the vehicle.

    • If you exit and lock the doors before the two minutes are up, the update will begin immediately. If you don’t lock the doors manually, they will lock automatically once the countdown reaches zero.

    • If you decide you no longer want to proceed with the update, tap Cancel before the countdown reaches zero. Once the update has begun, you will be unable to pause or cancel it.

  6. The update will start installing. Follow the progress indicator on your vehicle displays and in the Lucid mobile app. The update may install faster or more slowly than estimated depending on factors like the strength of your internet connection.

  7. When the update is complete, you will see a notification in your vehicle and in the Lucid mobile app.

Scheduling a Software Update

You can pick a convenient time when you won’t be using your vehicle to install the latest software update by following the steps below.

Note that the same preconditions as those mentioned above must be met for the installation to start. For example, if you schedule your update to install overnight, but your vehicle isn’t charged to at least 20% at the scheduled time, you will wake up and find that the update did not install. To ensure any scheduled updates happen when you want them to, make sure to check the preconditions beforehand.

When you’re ready to schedule your update, follow these steps:

  1. On the Pilot Panel, go to Settings > About in Lucid Air vehicles with UX 2.0 and Settings > Software in Lucid Air vehicles with UX 3.0 and in Lucid Gravity.

  2. Tap Schedule.

  3. Read the Before You Start instructions, then tap Next.

  4. Use the date and time picker to select when you would like your update to install. You can select a time up to 48 hours in advance. Swipe up or down to select a day, hour, and minute, and whether your selected time is AM or PM.

  5. Double-check your selection, then tap Schedule.

After you tap Schedule, you will be brought back to the main OTA screen, which will display your scheduled update time.

You can also schedule an update from the Lucid mobile app:

  1. Tap the push notification announcing the available software update, the software update banner under your Car Controls, or the Software Update tile if it says Update Available.

  2. Tap Schedule.

  3. Read the Before You Start instructions, then tap Next.

  4. Use the date and time picker to select when you would like your update to install, up to 48 hours from the current date and time. Swipe up or down to select a day, hour, and minute, and whether your selected time is AM or PM.

  5. Double-check your selection, then tap Schedule.

Starting a Scheduled Update Immediately

You can opt to override the schedule and install the update immediately by tapping Install Now. You can also cancel the scheduled update by tapping Cancel.

These actions are possible both in the vehicle and in the Lucid mobile app.

Editing the Time of a Scheduled Update

You can also modify the scheduled date and time by tapping the Pencil icon next to the scheduled time. This will open the same date and time picker you used to select the original time. Pick a new time, then tap Schedule.

Your plans can change, which is why you will receive two notifications on your in-vehicle display before your update is scheduled to begin: the first 30 minutes before and the second 2 minutes before. These notifications give you the opportunity to park and prepare for the update, to delay the update, or to reschedule it entirely.

  • To proceed as planned, find a place to park your vehicle, get out, and lock the doors. The update will begin on schedule.

  • To delay the update by 60 minutes, tap Delay 1 Hour. You will receive the same notification again in 30 minutes.

  • To reschedule, tap Reschedule.

Scheduled Updates and Climate Modes

Your Lucid has various climate modes to help keep your cabin comfortable while you’re away. If these modes are on when your update is scheduled to start, the update will be canceled automatically. This is because these modes are designed to keep vehicle occupants comfortable while the driver is away, and vehicles can’t be occupied during software updates.

If your scheduled software update is canceled because of an active climate mode, you will need to reschedule it for another time or start the update manually when you’re ready.

Software Updates and Charging

When your vehicle software is updating, one or several of many electronic control units (ECUs) that power it receive new code, including the ones that control your battery and charging. For this reason, charging must be paused while software updates are in progress.

This means that if you are plugged in to a DC fast charging station, the option to install an update will be disabled. If you are plugged in to a DC fast charging station when a scheduled update is meant to begin, the update will automatically be canceled, and you will need to reschedule it for another time.

If you are using Level 2 charging at home, charging will temporarily pause during the update. Some at-home AC charging systems, including the Lucid Connected Home Charging Station, will begin charging your vehicle again automatically once the update is complete. Other home charging stations might need to be re-started manually. If charging does not begin again automatically, simply unplug and plug in again.

How Do Over-the-Air Software Updates Work?

OTAs involve sending new software to your vehicle. Lucid has a dedicated team of engineers and developers that build the software that powers your vehicle. When new software is ready, we need a reliable way to get it to you. There are a few steps we take to make sure every software release meets the highest standards before we deliver it to your vehicle:

Step 1 – Testing and validation

First, we rigorously test and validate new software to make sure it works as expected. With all the different onboard computers, components, sensors, and signals powering Lucid vehicles, this is an important and complex process. We do not release software until it has passed all our internal tests with flying colors.

Step 2 – Packaging and uploading

Once we have validated the software update, we package it into a compressed file that includes the new code that will be installed and the instructions for the vehicle to open the package, install the software, and, if needed, overwrite any outdated software. This process is managed through a cloud-based server, and with the click of a mouse, our team uploads the package for batched distribution to Lucid vehicles. Sending a large software package to thousands of vehicles all over the world uses a lot of computing power, so we stagger distribution to ensure smooth downloads and successful installation.

Step 3 – Notifying and downloading

Your vehicle is constantly sending data back and forth with Lucid. When it checks the cloud server and verifies that an update is available, it notifies you. Once you tap the appropriate button, the package starts downloading.

Step 4 – Verification and installation

As the software package downloads, your vehicle checks to verify its integrity and source. Once your vehicle confirms that it is safe and that no crucial files are missing, it will proceed with installing the update. During this entire process, your doors will lock and remain locked, your displays will be disabled, and charging will be paused. You can monitor the progress of the update on both the vehicle display and in the Lucid mobile app.

Step 5 – Post-installation checks and completion

Once the new software has been installed, your vehicle will complete a few final checks to ensure everything is running as expected. Once these checks are done, you will be notified that the update is complete and can start using your vehicle again. Be sure to check the release notes to learn about what’s new in your vehicle.

You can read the entire release history for your vehicle in the Owner’s Portal.

Frequently Asked Questions

An over-the-air update is how Lucid delivers new software to your vehicle to offer improvements, provide new features, and when necessary, resolve applicable recalls.

Due to the complexity of each software update, it is not possible to install more than one at a time. If you fall behind on your software updates, you will need to install each one individually, either by scheduling it or tapping Install Now. To avoid falling behind on your software updates, make a point of installing them within two days of receiving them. You can always schedule an update for the most convenient time for you, up to 48 hours into the future.

If you are unable to drive after a software update, call Lucid Customer Care at +1 (888)-99-LUCID and our team will assist you.

When Lucid delivers a software update, it travels “over the air” from a cloud-based server to your vehicle. These updates often include very large files and require a significant amount of computing resources. To use these resources efficiently and ensure Lucid owners have the smoothest download and installation process possible, updates are sent out in batches.

If you have heard about an update, but your vehicle hasn’t notified you yet that an update is available, you will receive it in due course, provided it applies to your vehicle. For example, if an OTA pertains to an upgrade for purchase and you have not made that purchase, you will not receive OTAs related to that upgrade.

Updates are best delivered to your vehicle over Wi-Fi. The speed of your download depends in large part on the strength of your network. Your Wi-Fi signal can be affected by your distance from the Wi-Fi router, how many devices are connected to the same network, and your internet service provider. To ensure the fastest possible download speeds, make sure you are connected to a private, secure Wi-Fi network using the appropriate frequency (2.4 GHz if you are farther from your router and need better range or 5 GHz of you are close to your router and want higher speeds). Use a Wi-Fi extender if your router is very far away to boost speeds further.

OTA updates range from very simple to very complex. Small infotainment-only updates might only take a few minutes, while updates with new advanced features may take several hours. A best estimate of the time needed for the OTA to complete is provided when we notify you that an update is available, but it may differ based on the factors listed above.

On occasion, your over-the-air software update might not install as planned because of an unexpected error. If this happens, you will see an error on your displays and in the Lucid mobile app.

If your software update is unsuccessful, your vehicle will continue to use the current software while Lucid’s OTA team reviews your update and determines the best next step. You will be notified when the update is ready to be installed again, and when you install it, make sure you have a strong internet connection. Your vehicle must have a strong and stable Wi-Fi or cellular internet connection for software to download and install successfully. If this connection becomes weaker or cuts out for an extended period of time, your vehicle may be unable to complete the update.
